The journey begins in Les Sables d’Olonne, opposite the Remblai swimming pool. It’s a good opportunity to take a detour to the Île Penotte district, with its walls adorned with dreamlike seashell frescoes by Dan Aubrin. Before setting off, remember to pack a hat and a water bottle: the entire route is feasible even for children, but represents 44 km. Beware of sunstroke and dehydration! The first part of the Vélodyssée takes you past the sea and numerous rocky coves, as well as a pine forest overlooking the dunes.
When you arrive in Talmont Saint Hilaire, you’ ll come across a place called Cul d’Ane, which has the peculiarity of being submersible at certain times of the day. Make sure you get there on time. Nearby, you’ll find the Pointe de la Baie de Cayola, a steep, natural spot from which you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the sea. Once in Talmont Saint Hilaire, enjoy a well-deserved stopover in this village, which offers a number of attractions for the little ones: the Aquarium de Vendée, with its many aquariums depicting various underwater ecosystems, as well as the Richard the Lionheart castle, where medieval shows and falcon flights are held during the summer months.
Continue on and enter the magnificent Longeville state forest, just past Saint Vincent sur Jard. Then, as you follow the stretch, you’ll pass close to the beautiful Plage des Conches, an ideal spot for a swim between stages. The equally renowned Veillon beach is often taken by storm by surfers and other board sports enthusiasts. Last but not least, don’t miss the Bud Bud spot at La Tranche-sur-mer, a seaside resort where you can enjoy a well-deserved rest and charming, lively streets to quench your thirst or enjoy an ice cream.
