Tour of the Jard-sur-Mer marshes

Does Jard-sur-mer conjure up images of beaches, harbours and sunshine? Just a few kilometers from this famous seaside resort, however, you’ll find a much more original setting, one that’s typical of the region: the marshes of Jard-sur-mer.

Halfway between land and sea, this area combines salt marshes and fish marshes once created by man, in a unique setting full of charm. Put on your walking shoes and set off to explore this unspoilt area, where you’ll be able to observe numerous species of birds right next to our 4-star campsite in the Vendée.

Accessible to all, the walk takes you around the marshes: allow 8 km, or half a day, to complete the loop at your own pace. The walk starts upstream of the Payré stream, just outside Jard (towards Talmont). To reach the start of the walk, head for the Chemin de l’Ensoivière, accessible via the impasse de la Caillère or impasse de Prés. You’ll then have to go up the path for 2 km, through fields and pastures, before crossing the Jard-Talmont road. Last stop before entering the marshes: the hamlet of La Vinière, with its charming restored stone houses. Cross the small bridge and you’re back in the marshes. The path winds its way through ponds and “bossis” (dykes joining the marshes), allowing you to see both the cattle grazing on the pastures and the birds living in the marshes: ducks, swans, but also grey herons. A unique combination of varied landscapes and abundant wildlife for wonderful photo memories!

To return, simply cross the Jard-Talmont road back up to your campsite or accommodation in Jard sur Mer.
